Summary:
Under the supervision of the Radiologist and according to established policies and procedures, operates imaging equipment as required, to obtain fluoroscopic images according to Radiologist specifications; will assist the Radiologist in protocols/procedures as required.
The Interventional Radiology Technologist is trained to assist physicians with a wide variety of minimally invasive, image-guided vascular procedures. The technologist prepares patients for procedures by reviewing medical history, draping and positioning the patient, preparing procedural/testing sites and administering contrast media and/or medications within scope of practice. The technologist works closely with physicians and nurses to assist with monitoring patient conditions continually and reports/responds to changes in status as appropriate.
Must be able to provide professional and quality care while following hospital policies, procedures and standards. May be responsible for specific areas of instruction in the training of new staff or others in specialty assigned areas for procedures, protocols, equipment and/or safety issues.
Job Responsibilities:
1) CLINICAL DECISION MAKING
Utilizes the professional code of ethics with patient and family to establish patient and family relationship(s). Formulates clinical decision based on the ability to combine theoretical knowledge and clinical expertise for both the non-complex and complex patient. Identifies one’s own clinical limitations and seeks appropriate internal and external resources to improve patient care. Performs quality diagnostic exams. Questions appropriateness of standards of care, policy & procedure and protocols to improve patient care. Functions as a preceptor/mentor and is recognized for strong clinical skills by peers. Demonstrates knowledge of developmental stages for the following age groups and applies developmental theories and concepts when planning and implementing plan of care for the patient. Is sensitive to cultural differences and considers their impact on care and incorporates culturally sensitive interventions using consultation and resources.
2) PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Initiates specific plans for continuous educational development to meet the demands of changing professional practice. Actively seeks and is receptive to honest feedback from multidisciplinary healthcare team in ways to improve overall quality of care. ARRT Registered and follows state/organization requirements for registry. Demonstrates evidence of advanced knowledge in specialty and prepares for certification for advancement as a requirement for advancement to expert. Assists in the development of QA program and assists in data collection.
3) HEALTHCARE TEAM RELATIONSHIPS
Effectively builds and nurtures relationships and values others. Role models effective delegation and negotiation skills within the health care team. Utilizes and participates in staff meetings and discussions regarding patient care and/or practice issues. Seeks a professional colleague to enter into a mentoring relationship.
4) Scrubs, circulates, and documents all Interventional procedures successfully without assistance and takes call independently. Maintains sterile technique and proper equipment and supply handling without assistance or guidance. Has successfully completed ACLS and the Baystate Dysrhythmia course.
Required Work Experience:
1) Graduate of an approved radiology program.
Preferred Work Experience:
1) 1 year as an Interventional Radiology Tech.
Skills and Competencies:
1) Ability to work with computer applications. Demonstrates good verbal and written communication. Able to work independently and be self-motivated.
