Surgical Technologist Intern

Location: Baystate Medical Center, Springfield, MA
Schedule: Per diem | 8–12 hours per week
Department: Main Operating Room or Chestnut Day Surgery OR

About the Role

Under the guidance of a clinical preceptor, RN Service Line Supervisor, and surgeon or physician, the Surgical Technologist Intern supports the safe and efficient delivery of surgical care. This internship offers exposure to a wide range of surgical procedures, with opportunities to build foundational skills in sterile technique, instrumentation, teamwork, and surgical anticipation.

As a Surgical Technologist Intern, you will:

  • Assist in preparing the operating room for surgical procedures

  • Maintain and manage surgical instruments and sterile supplies

  • Learn to anticipate the needs of the surgical team throughout procedures

  • Ensure a sterile, organized, and safe operating room environment

  • Handle and label specimens appropriately

  • Gain understanding of pharmacological agents used during surgery

  • Develop skills in sharps safety, aseptic technique, and intraoperative temperature regulation

  • Collaborate with the surgical team in delivering quality patient care

What We’re Looking For

Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in the senior year of an accredited Surgical Technology program

  • Must obtain Surgical Technologist certification within 6 months of graduation

Skills & Competencies:

  • Knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques

  • Understanding of human anatomy and surgical procedures

  • Ability to work effectively in a high-pressure team environment

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • Familiarity with medical terminology and surgical tools
