SPD Educator

flexible schedule for Off shift requirements that may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Summary:

Reporting to the Regional Director of Surgical Support Services, the SPD educator will ensure that the philosophy, core values, vision, operating principles, and behaviors of Baystate Health are applied within the unit’s current practices in sterile instrument processing to support the highest quality of collaborative, efficient, safe, and effective patient care. Manages education and quality assurance throughout Sterile Processing workflows. Leads staff in continuous improvement following AAMI standards and IFU.

 Participates in collaborative real-time root cause analysis and corrective action planning as defects occur. Serves as the liaison with surgical services leadership, surgical teams, and physicians to maintain high levels of quality, accuracy, and timeliness of sterile products needed to support patient care. Collaboratively ensures the sterilization processes adhere to standards of practice established by OSHA, FDA, AORN, and AAMI. 

Assumes the role of instrumentation expert in all areas of surgical services, assists with staff education, mentors, and develops SPD staff, and assists in the evaluation of staff performance. Assists manager with input for staff evaluation and performance.

Maintain quality assurance, assign work, and coordinated activities of Sterile Processing Technicians and Service Coordinators.

Job Responsibilities:

1) The Sterile Processing Educator is responsible for the planning, implementation, and appraisal of the orientation, competency, Quality Assurance Program, and professional development of the Sterile Processing personnel

2) Additionally, is also responsible for the development and maintenance of the Sterile Processing Department policies and procedures in coordination with the Regional Director of Sterile Processing and will oversee education and quality monitoring for Sterile Processing Departments

3) The Sterile Processing Educator will evaluate and implement educational programs for the CSP department, and continuously assess the activities of CSP personnel regarding the preparation of packaging, sterilization, decontamination, stocking, and delivery of instruments and equipment

4) The Educator is responsible for developing unit-specific competencies, training, and performance management planning for the department.

5) Creates and maintains a positive work environment and demonstrates the ability to act on employee opinions and concerns, facilitating open, honest communication

6) Supports the ongoing development of staff through coaching, mentoring, and role modeling.

7) Provides staff with direct, honest, and constructive feedback during and after training.

8) Assist the manager with completing the performance appraisal process for staff and coaches’ staff, as appropriate.

9) Creates an environment that supports and celebrates the educational growth of the staff. Partners with all servicing department educators to identify the educational needs of staff related to variable unit needs and unit-specific services provided.

10) Other jobs as assigned

Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Health Science or related field

Required Work Experience:

7+ years of overall sterile processing and/or surgical technologist experience

Preferred Work Experience:

5+ years of experience in the role of a Manager / Lead or Supervisor

 7)  Competent proven ability to develop and implement robust educational plans  to ensure employees' competencies and survey readiness

8)  Experience with Excel and other quality and statistical tracking tools a plus

9)  working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications

10)  Strong understanding of data as it applies to process improvement
