Summary:

The Perinatal Safety Nurse is a member of Obstetric Nursing Leadership team and is responsible for the development and oversight of OB safety and quality improvement initiatives across the Obstetrics Department (WETU, LDR, Postpartum, Lactation Services).  This includes, but is not limited to, adhering to national perinatal safety bundles and the Joint Commission Elements of Performance for Maternal Safety.  The Perinatal Safety Nurse serves as a patient safety advocate and clinical role model in obstetrics.  They are expected to provide real time clinical support, model a culture of safety behavior, and create sustainable safety programs in collaboration with OB nursing and medical leadership and other departments such as Risk Management and Healthcare Quality.  This individual will report to the Director of Patient Care Services, Women’s/Inpatient OB Services.

Job Responsibilities:

Oversees implementation and evaluation of obstetric patient safety and quality initiatives, including national safety bundles and Joint Commission Elements of Performance for Maternal Safety in partnership with the Medical Director of Perinatal Services and Medical Director of L&D/WETU. Oversees safety event report management including investigation, follow up, and trends of SRS reports in partnership with nursing/provider leadership, Performance Improvement Coordinator, and Risk Management.  Additionally, review adverse events and be a member of OB Filter Committee. Assist with coordination of care of anticipated high risk OB patients and nursing preparedness in partnership with MFM and other departments. Coordination of scheduled deliveries of OB patients from outside groups/hospitals who will come to BMC for delivery only. Partners with OB Outcomes Nurse to develop quality and safety initiatives driven by clinical outcomes. Partners with OB Educator to develop and facilitate interdisciplinary communication and education as it relates to perinatal safety.  This includes multidisciplinary simulation of obstetrical emergencies and ongoing EFM education. Partners with Medical Director of Perinatal Services to oversee Perinatal Transfers to BMC OB including reviewing declination report. Oversee scheduled inductions and cesareans: Review clinical indications including eligibility for outpatient cervical ripening, optimize resource utilization around scheduled deliveries, work in partnership with NM/ANM and Medical Director for approval of additional slots. Coordination of patient and care team support after adverse events.  Evaluates BH system approach to quality and safety initiatives, identifying if opportunity to extend program to BFMC. Participates in the Perinatal-Neonatal Quality Improvement Network of Massachusetts (PNQIN) as the BMC representative. Participates in departmental meetings including, but not limited to, OB Filter Review, OB Case Review, M&M, RCAs, and Performance Improvement.

Required Work Experience: 

  • At least three years of recent Labor & Delivery clinical experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Current MA RN License
  • NCC certification in EFM or Inpatient Obstetrics
  • NRP

Preferred Work Experience: 

  • At least five years of recent Labor & Delivery clinical experience
  • Master’s degree in nursing
  • Experience with project management and/or leading a team
  • NCC Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Safety certification (C-ONQS) within 12 months of assuming role

Skills and Competencies: 

This individual should have a high level of project management and communication skills.  They must have the ability to work collaboratively with staff, providers, and all levels of hospital leadership. They must understand safety practice principles, remain up to date on national perinatal standards and regulatory requirements.  They must have excellent time

Bachelors Degree in Nursing (Required)

Certifications:

EFM or Inpatient Obstetrics – NCC, Registered Nurse – State of Massachusetts
