Baystate Medical Center’s Labor & Delivery Department is one of the busiest and most advanced obstetrical units in Western Massachusetts, offering comprehensive care for low- to high-risk pregnancies. As a Level III Perinatal Center and Baby-Friendly designated hospital, we are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, highly skilled multidisciplinary teams, and a commitment to compassionate, patient- and family-centered care. Our department supports over 4,000 births annually and offers services including 24/7 in-house obstetrics, anesthesiology, maternal-fetal medicine, and a Level III NICU.
Job Summary
Baystate Health is seeking a skilled and dedicated Surgical Technologist to join our Labor & Delivery team at Baystate Medical Center. This role supports the safe and effective performance of invasive surgical procedures—primarily cesarean sections and other obstetric surgical interventions—under the direct guidance of surgeons and physicians.
As a Surgical Technologist in Labor & Delivery, you will apply your knowledge of aseptic technique, surgical anatomy, and instrumentation to ensure quality outcomes and patient safety. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to support mothers and newborns during some of the most critical moments of care.
Key Responsibilities

Maintain safety in the operation, management, and inspection of surgical equipment and instruments according to manufacturer guidelines and hospital protocols.

Participate as a key member of the surgical team, with knowledge of patient history, allergies, and care plans.

Understand and manage pharmacologic agents dispensed to the sterile field, including identification of doses and mixtures.

Maintain an aseptic environment to promote optimal surgical outcomes.

Complete all documentation accurately within the scope of surgical technologist responsibilities.

Follow the standards set in the Surgical Technologist Level I clinical recognition ladder.

Adhere to sharps safety, intraoperative temperature regulation, and specimen handling policies.

Demonstrate strong communication and knowledge of medical terminology.
Required Qualifications

Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program (Committee on Allied Health Education Association or equivalent structured training).

Certification required unless exempt by experience in a surgical facility prior to July 1, 2013.

Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
