Summary:

The Apprentice Nurse Program (ANP) will function in a supportive role to a registered nurse and work collaboratively with the health care team in the management of patient care.  This position allows the student to gain experience in providing care to a diverse patient population and to develop strong communication and organizational skills.  Students will report to the Manager of Nurse Residency Program/and or Nursing Unit Manager or designee. Clinical responsibility will be coordinated by the clinical supervisor.  ANPs will perform direct patient care (hygiene, skin care, mobility, and assistance with elimination needs), obtain and record vital signs, collect laboratory specimens, document intake/output, communicate effectively with patients/staff, promote patient safety, and function as a team member within the health system.  

Adherence to Baystate Health and department compliance policies and all applicable laws and regulations is mandatory.

ANP leadership is committed to conversations with ANP members to meet the individual needs of the student.

Requirements:

1) Provides age-appropriate care to patients.

Demonstrated knowledge of developmental stages for the following age groups and applied developmental theories and concepts when implementing care for patients.

2) Assists patients with the elimination of body wastes.

Offers assistance to bathroom, or provides bedpan, urinal, commode, or emesis basin immediately after patient request as indicated by the absence of patient complaints. Accurately labels and sends specimens of urine, feces, and sputum within 30 minutes of the specified time frame unless discussed with RN as evidenced by random review of reports. Accurately measures and records height, weight, and vital signs in accordance with established policy as indicated by random review of intake and output forms.

Communicates effectively with team, patients, and family to promote patient safety. Interacts with patients in a respectful and informative manner; clearly communicates information related to patient care to the team; recognizes culturally based patient and family needs.

6) Is knowledgeable of emergency procedures and resources and is ready to act in the event of an emergency.

7) Assists in the delivery of ancillary services as directed.

8) Assists with clerical/support activities related to physician practice and treatment activities.

Works to ensure proper scheduling of patients for ancillary services. Recognizes when a referral is needed from a third-party provider and communicates the need to coworkers in a timely manner. Assists clerical staff as available in preparing charts for scheduled appointments. Assure patients have been registered and all insurance information is in order prior to processing patients for services. Record and file laboratory/radiological testing results and other pertinent information in the patient record in a timely fashion as evidenced by the manager's review.

9) Takes and records routine vital signs within the specified time frame as indicated by periodic review of time studies. Obtains and documents weights/heights 100% of the time as indicated by quarterly review of records. Consistently reports any significant deviations in vital signs or other patient findings immediately.

Participates in Phlebotomy and/or Dysrhythmia Courses

Required Experience:

1 full year experience as an ANP/ CNA/ MA/ HHA/ EMT/PCT/Medic or applicable patient care experience.

Preferred Experience:

None listed

Required Education:

High School Diploma/GED

RN program students actively enrolled and participating in an accredited nursing program

Education:

GED or HiSET (Required)

Certifications:

Compensation

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.

$19.29 – $22.16 – $25.87
