Position Summary
Baystate Health is seeking an experienced Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) to join the Labor & Delivery Department at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.
Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist works directly with obstetricians, surgeons, physicians, and the interdisciplinary care team to ensure the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures, including obstetrical and emergency cesarean deliveries.
The Surgical Technologist applies expert knowledge of sterile and aseptic technique, human anatomy, surgical procedures, instrumentation, and advancing surgical technologies to support high-quality patient care. This role requires the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team, maintain a sterile environment, and adapt to changing patient and procedural needs throughout the operation.
The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in achieving safe, efficient, and exceptional surgical outcomes while demonstrating professionalism, teamwork, and a commitment to quality care in the fast-paced Labor & Delivery environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Meet the expectations and requirements of the Surgical Technologist clinical recognition ladder.
- Identify and resolve instrumentation kit and case cart discrepancies proactively.
- Promote safe, high-quality patient care throughout the surgical experience.
- Maintain positive teamwork, professionalism, and service excellence.
- Communicate patient needs effectively with nurses, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other members of the care team.
- Assist with patient positioning for anesthesia and specialty-specific surgical procedures.
- Maintain infection prevention and sterile technique standards throughout the surgical environment.
- Set up, operate, position, and clean intraoperative equipment.
- Collaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary surgical team using professional communication.
- Adapt to changes in the intraoperative plan of care while demonstrating knowledge of medications dispensed to the sterile field, including proper identification, labeling, and handling in accordance with departmental policies.
Required Qualifications
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) certification required.
- Minimum of 2 years of Surgical Technologist experience.
- One year of employment at Baystate Medical Center or two years of comparable experience with demonstrated competency upon completion of orientation.
Grandfather Provision: Surgical Technologists employed in this role prior to July 1, 2013, may be considered qualified based on prior experience and demonstrated competency and are not required to meet the current education requirements.

Note: The compensation range(s) in the table below represent the base salaries for all positions at a given grade across the health system. Typically, a new hire can expect a starting salary somewhere in the lower part of the range. Actual salaries may vary by position and will be determined based on the candidate's relevant experience. No employee will be paid below the minimum of the range. Pay ranges are listed as hourly for non-exempt employees and based on assumed full time commitment for exempt employees.
