Summary:
The VICE PRESIDENT OF SURGICAL SERVICES is responsible for overall strategic and operational planning for the growth initiatives of surgical services across Baystate Health (BH). Provides direct leadership and overall administration of the surgical services at BH that includes planning, budgeting, human resource management, quality improvement, coordination and expansion of clinical services, policy development/implementation and collaboration with surgeons and BH Administrators to ensure we deliver on our organizational promise to deliver a higher state of caring.
The vice president participates in strategic planning, financial forecasting and recruitment and retention initiatives, and other aspects of patient care delivery at the direction of the President, BMC & SVP Hospital Operations, BH. The position oversees the surgical service line performance to ensure services meet established safety, quality, patient experience and value expectations and develops solutions and action plans to address any safety, quality, efficiency, and/or cost issues.
This individual is expected to work closely with surgeons, physician and nurse leaders as well as the BH leadership team to ensure that there is a consistent leadership vision and partnership between the hospital and the physicians at all times to fulfill our mission to improve the health of the people in our communities every day with quality and compassion.

Job Responsibilities:
1) Demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of surgical service operations and the practice of perioperative nursing.
2) Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of hospital regulatory compliance, i.e. standards, CMS Conditions of Participation, AORN and ASPAN standards.
3) Monitor and assure compliance with regulatory and accrediting organizations and hospital policies that create a culture of safety that consistently delivers safe, timely and reliable care and outcomes.
4) Demonstrates awareness of industry standard changes and best practices and develops measurable quality improvement plans as needed.
5) Direct efforts to increase surgical volume and market share by providing administrative and financial leadership and accountability for strategic planning, human resource management and the activities of all phases of care with the surgical service departments.
6)Work with the surgery physician executives to design, develop, organize, direct, measure, and promote surgical programs that deliver a superior patient experience and quality outcomes that matter to patients.
7) Work collaboratively with BH Operations and Physician Leadership teams to monitor, measure, and report on operational and marketing issues, opportunities, and new program development plans and achievements within agreed formats and time frames.
8) Manages human capital and applies scheduling logistic in collaborations with the Director(s) of Surgical Service and other patient care leaders that establishes and sustains a stable, engaged and efficient direct clinical workforce and sterile processing team.
9) Communicate with physicians and work closely with medical directors and Chair of surgical department to maintain a high standard of medical care and development of strong collaborative relationships with surgeons.
10) The role oversees and supports talent development of the Surgical Services leadership team to ensure succession planning, mentorship and coaching within departments leading to strategic goal accomplishment.
11) This role also advocates for and communicates any system technology needs to support the perioperative operations.
12) Supports and delivers on Magnet initiatives in collaboration with the CNO.
