Grant Writer

The Grant Writer is part of the Strategic Grants team and reports to the Director of Strategic Grants as part of the Baystate Health Strategy team. The Strategic Grants team supports grant seeking and grant writing on behalf of programs that advance Baystate Health's strategic objectives and overarching strategic plan. The Strategic Grant team's primary aim is to earn grant resources for Baystate Health that allow the system to initiate or maintain work that is related to the system’s strategic objectives (including the 4 Compass Points of Safety, Quality, Experience and Value) with a special focus on population health and social determinants of health. The Strategic Grants team seeks grant funding for breakthrough programs that allow Baystate Health to advance its strategy. The team coordinates closely with Baystate’s Office of Public Health, especially around funding opportunities that involve community partnerships aimed at enhancing population health.


  • Writes successful grant and funding proposals as needed in a timely manner, securing technical assistance and collaborating with teams of content matter experts to develop and review proposal drafts
  • Helps to build grant seeking teams to advance current and new grant proposals that are driven by strategic objectives and grounded in a well-considered plan
  • Serves as liaison with grant project leads/managers in researching and compiling data, narrative, and financial information necessary for grant applications
  • Conducts ongoing grants research including federal and state grant forecasting and private and corporate foundation research via FDO, Instrumentl, GrantStation, GuideStar, and other resources
  • Drafts prospect memos with necessary information for decision making and maintaining/updating prospect files
  • Ensures compliance by grant teams with Go/No-Go process
  • Maintains grants calendar including proposal deadlines and forecasting
  • Performs other strategic grants research and writing duties as needed

What You Will Need:

  • Proven success in winning government and/or private philanthropic grant awards and/or strong fundraising and development experience
  • Ability to work independently and strategically to accomplish multiple and varied projects in a fast-paced collaborative environment
  • Strong research and verbal/written communication abilities
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills including the ability to interact effectively with people of all backgrounds
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines and strong computer skills
  • Project management experience with varied teams and collaborators
