Baystate Health, western Massachusetts’s premier healthcare provider, and home to Baystate Medical Center (BMC), a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence is looking for a Supervisor Perianesthesia Surgical Services to join our surgical team in the Paranesthesia Unit.

SUMMARY:

  • Under the direction of the Manager the Supervisor Perianesthesia Surgical Services Line is responsible for performing a full range of tasks to monitor and ensure excellence and quality in the Perianesthesia clinical service operations performance.
  • The Supervisor Perianesthesia Surgical Services Line is accountable for safety, quality, effective and efficient management of the clinical processes in the Perianesthesia department and facilitates throughput in the clinical area and the model of care for patient outcomes by applying evidence-based practices in accordance with unit policies.  
  • Responsibility is centralized within six major areas: 
    • Clinical Practice and Quality Outcomes, Human Resource Leadership, Management of Environment, Financial Growth and Stewardship and Operational Planning and Collaboration.   

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:

  • This unit has a highly experienced team that prepares and recovers adult and pediatric patients for the operating rooms.
  • Our unit supports the main level 1 trauma OR at Baystate Medical Center which includes seventeen operating rooms.
  • This is a high acuity, fast paced, patient focused, and collaborative environment.

RESPONSIBILITES:

Clinical Operations: The Supervisor administers direct nursing care to patients and serves as a clinical resource and role model of clinical excellence for staff.  The supervisor facilitates operational processes, monitors, and ensures excellence in all clinical and technological practices, process efficiency, workflow optimization and staffing for the provision of the highest quality of patient care. Is a leader who is highly visible on the patient care units and is responsible for the effective management of patient progress and outcomes of care.

Human Resource Leadership:  The Supervisor in collaboration with the Nurse Manager leads a positive work environment that facilitates the delivery of excellent patient and caregiver experience. The supervisor exhibits leadership skills which promote the philosophy, core values, vision, operating principles, and behaviors of Baystate Health. Ensures these are applied within current practices to support highest quality of collaborative, efficient, safe, and effective patient care.  In alignment with the Nurse Manager, is responsible for:  recruiting and hiring; staff development; recognition; retention; establishing performance expectations for success; delivering performance appraisals and implementing corrective action.

Education and Training: Staff Development/Human Resource Management. The supervisor creates an environment that supports staff engagement, celebrates successes through positive feedback and promotes the educational growth of the staff.

   

Collaboration: The supervisor collaborates with other members of the healthcare team, to ensure the delivery of all services are coordinated to meet patient specific care needs. The supervisor, as a member of Surgical Services leadership team is expected to participate in team meetings, committees, and projects as necessary.

   

Fiscal: Accountable to manage within budget in collaboration with the Nurse Manager as evidenced by metrics.  Stewards financial resources and promotes growth by developing business plans and budget for their unit in collaboration with the Nurse Manager per organizational goals and other relevant factors.  Establishes expectations with the Nurse Manager and hold accountable staff regarding the delivery of high quality, affordable care.  Responds to budget variances in a proactive, timely manner in partnership with the Nurse Manager.

   

Operational Planning:  The Supervisor, in concert with the Nurse Manager, sets a progressive pace for performance improvement and based on assessment of internal and external influences, creates and implements plans that have a positive impact of the delivery of patient care and a positive work environment.  Makes healthcare operations decisions/problem resolution to facilitate proper and timely patient flow on the unit and effective operations of the unit.  Establishes staffing plans that respond to changing needs of the unit.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Evaluates nursing, PCT and OA performance. Participates in annual employee evaluations and provides performance feedback evaluations to staff members as assigned by Nurse Managers.
  • Maintains proficiency of skills/knowledge in using all associated computer applications and is a clinical resource to staff.
  • Supports and maintains a positive work environment by demonstration of effective problem solving, conflict resolution, and acknowledging the contribution of others to foster positive collaborative team engagement.
  • Responsible for nurse supervision on the weekends and off shifts (day/night), including holidays.
  • Collaborates with the surgical areas to align workflows between units.
  • Develops daily staffing assignments in accordance with skills/competencies.  Identifies gas and actively works with clinical nurse educator/supervisors for performance improvement.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Nurse Specialist to ensure staff education meets clinical knowledge required for specialty equipment, instrumentation, and processes.
  • Participates in Clinical Practice Committee, Performance Improvement committee and meetings as assigned.
  • Sees the Big Picture and actively seeks resources or advise from multiple disciplines to solve problems and facilitate action planning.
  • Acknowledges the contribution of others providing recognition and engages them to change and grow.
  • Participates with the leadership team in developing processes that achieve desired cost and quality outcomes.  Under the direction of the leadership team applies personnel, unit, and organizational policies/procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SCHEDULE:

  • Full-time, 40-hours per week.
  • Schedule/Hours: Rotating days -5:30AM-2:00PM; including Saturday rotation as needed (likely to be every third Saturday).
  • Baystate Medical Center, Springfield MA

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Education: ASN required, BSN preferred.
  • Successfully passed Board of Registration in Nursing Examination and is licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider BLS certification required.
  • ACLS Required.
  • PALS Required.
  • CPAN/CAPA Certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Qualified Candidates will possess expert knowledge of the service specialty with a minimum 3 years of experience and proven leadership capabilities (preferred).
