Summary:
According to the Massachustts Board of Registration in Nursing, the title Registered Nurse First Assistant at Surgery (RNFA) is defined as, "The Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a Registered Nurse with specialized education and documented competency in perioperative nursing practice consistent with the RNFA Standards of Practice established by the Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN) through successful completion of a post-basic nursing education program whose intent is the preparation of registered nurses to practice as first assistants at surgery." General Competencies of the RNFA as described by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing in Advisory Ruling 9901 are as listed below under "Essential Functions" (Massachusetts General Laws (G.L)., Chapter 30A, section 8 and chapter 112, section 80B February 26,1986, last revised June 11, 2014).
Job Responsibilities:
1) Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology;
2) Knowledge of operative techniques related to the procedures in which the RNFA assists;
3) Assist Surgeons in both general and specialized surgeries;
4) Perform effectively in stressful & emergency situations and CPR/ACLS certified;
5) Recognizes safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action in the surgical arena
6) Adhere to standard precautions and to the principles of asepsis and infection control and would not place self, patient, or others at risk for infectious disease transmission;
7) Ensure doscumentation is complete, accurate and legible in all records required by federal and state law;
8) Perform focused preoperative assessment;
9) Provide patient and family education;
10) Review and analyze patient data; and communicates with other healthcare providers about the patient's plan of care.
11) Administer medication under the direction of the surgeon
12) Practices surgical procedures such as controlling bleeding, suturing incisions, draping, providing exposure, cutting tissue, and handling tissue
13) Prepares all necessary supplies
14) Position and prepare the patient on the OR table
15) Performs post-operative assessments under the direction of the surgeon as needed
16) Participates in research
17) Performs CPR and other emergency measures as required
18) Assist with or arrange discharge plan and identify appropriate community resources as needed.
