Summary: 

Install, repair and replace pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, gas and drainage systems throughout hospital facilities as directed. Assist with general maintenance activities as directed.

Job Responsibilities: 

1) Consult with supervisor concerning assignments and keep supervisor informed of activities, needs and problems.

2) Coordinate, schedule and perform activities involved in plumbing. Perform preventive maintenance on all plumbing facilities. May act as crew leader when required by project work. Coordinate activities to accomplish work and assign helpers to complete tasks.

3) Provide direction, supervision, guidance and technical assistance as needed to work crew. Monitor and inspect work to insure compliance with work specifications, codes, and regulations.

4) Receive assignments and work orders. Review work orders, priority status, and designated time schedules. Estimate time, material and cost requirements. Requisition/order materials, equipment for work to be performed. Prepare pipe and plumbing fixtures for installation, replacement or repair by threading, measuring and shaping; perform tasks to prepare work area by disassembling old systems and cutting holes in walls and floors for pipes to pass. Plan installations by reading blueprints and schematics; request administrative permit: for installation; test equipment for approval for government inspector upon completion of installation. Perform pressure tests on piping and gas lines to insure proper functioning. Solder and caulk leaks and broken pipes and replace defective piping or fixtures; open clogged drains; thaw frozen pipes; install and repair medical gas lines in patient rooms and operating room; repair and replace other parts in valves or taps.

5) Repair and overhaul pumps, heat exchanges, remove and replace coils, replace valves and associated equipment on steam systems or boilers. Pack valves and pumps. Perform miscellaneous related tasks as assigned.

6) Maintain all required records and information pertinent to costing out work assignments as required. Prepare required reports. Maintain appropriate instruction manuals, blueprints and other such materials.

7) Apply cost-effective measures in the utilization of materials and personnel

8) Keep work areas orderly, clean and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies. Maintain adequate inventory of plumbing supplies, tools and parts.

9) Maintain safety policies of department. Wear protective equipment as required. Notify supervisor of any safety hazards.

10) Maintain established hospital and department policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

11) Attend meetings and in-services as required.

12) Maintain professional growth and development through educational programs, seminars, workshops, etc. Research new techniques, materials, equipment and make recommendations to supervisor.

Required Work Experience: 

1) Completion of apprenticeship in plumbing

2)  Familiarity with state plumbing codes and ordinances

3)  Sufficient previous experience as licensed plumber
