Summary: 

The incumbent provides effective and efficient management of the Microbiology and Molecular Biology Laboratories for Baystate Health. Ensures that physician orders for laboratory testing are processed quickly and efficiently. Ensures that all testing is carried out according to documented standards set by CMS, FDA, CAP, Joint Commission, or other regulatory agencies. Ensure that services operate within budgetary constraints. Accountable for the development and maintenance of a positive and effective work environment. In addition, provides technical expertise and clinical oversight to Baystate Franklin Medical Center, Baystate Wing/Mary Lane, and Baystate Nobel Hospitals

Job Responsibilities: 

Establish and maintain a quality metrics system utilizing regulatory requirements as a benchmark. Maintain a system that educates staff, monitors performance against standards, and strives for continuous improvement. Employ LEAN techniques as appropriate.

In concert with the Medical Director, ensures that medically necessary and clinically relevant testing, products, and services are offered. Support these by developing and maintaining a complete set of policies and procedures that meet all regulatory and operational requirements. Ensure staff knowledge and competency. 

Manage personnel and financial resources within budgetary limitations. 
Prepare annual expenses, capital, and new program budgets. Monitor performance at specified intervals, investigate variances and produce reports as required. Ensure that adequate supplies are purchased and stocked to support operations. Collaborate with Materials Management in negotiating agreements/contracts

  •  Ensure that staff are oriented and trained appropriately. Implement and maintain a system that measures competency consistent with CAP standards. Ensure that staff adheres to all OSHA mandated biosafety and ergonomic practices.
  • Responsible for: scheduling, staff development, engagement, recruitment, compensation, disciplinary action, performance management, promotions, transfers, termination, and similar actions.
  • Under the direction of the Medical Director(s) and Pathology Administration, introduce new tests, procedures, and instrumentation as required. Evaluate, select and recommend the maintenance of all equipment related to service areas.
  • Support collaboration, standardization, integration, and oversight of related services across Baystate Health and the growth of BRL outreach business
  • Acts as a resource to staff and physicians in the resolution of unusual findings and interpretation of results
  • Support and participate in internal educational programs as well as in affiliations with universities, colleges, and technical schools with programs in the laboratory and related medical fields
  • Assist in the development of departmental, institutional, and System goals and objectives. Participate on committees and in multidisciplinary projects as required
  • Develop and/or oversee the development of new policies and procedures. Ensure that policies are reviewed at specified intervals, and that the document control system meets regulatory standards
  • Is responsible for, applies, and models the Operating Principles in developing and maintaining a positive work environment.
  • Monitor performance of the Microbiology Laboratory. Continually review options for improved performance, growth, and expense savings.
  • Monitor performance of the Molecular Biology Laboratory.

  • Ensure that adequate facilities and equipment are available for the effective operation of each of the two services
  • Work with the management team to implement strategies that develop and maintain a competent, motivated and productive, engaged staff capable of meeting short and long term goals. Observe and and promote all health and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with other sections/areas to ensure that appropriate billing/charge and result reporting mechanisms are in place
  • Work to achieve continuous improvement in the areas of staff engagement, job satisfaction, inclusion, and respect for diversity

Required Work Experience:

  • 5 years in supervisory position in a microbiology laboratory environment.
  • Excellent communication skills required, as well as, a desire to provide a high level of customer service.
  • Ability to multi task.  
  • High level computer skills essential : Word, Excel, Sunquest, CoPath, CIS. 
  • Must have significant technical and clinical knowledge and experience in Molecular Biology and/or Microbiology, with ability to share, explain, teach, mentor and motivate others.
  • Bachelor's Degree Medical Technology or Lab Science, Master's Degree preferred
  • 5 years in supervisory position in a microbiology laboratory environment required
  • MT (ASCP) and/or MB (ASCP) required
