DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION:
The Electron Microscopy (EM) program is a subspecialty area within the laboratory that performs the evaluation of renal and muscle biopsies for patients which provides vital diagnostic information to support diagnoses for these patients.
The Department of Pathology received approximately around 200 cases each year, 2011-2020, for Electron Microscopy (EM) studies. The majority were renal biopsies. Volume is expected to remain steady with potential future clients from other hospitals in Western Massachusetts (including Berkshire and Mercy Medical Center) and from Boston area. With appropriate resources, it can later expand to other parts of New England.
As the only facility in Western Massachusetts providing this specific testing, downtime for a critical instrument affects not only Baystate Medical Center but also surrounding hospitals, including Holyoke, Cooley-Dickinson and Baystate Franklin. We are also uniquely positioned with the program to help support residency training and other services in the health system.
