Summary

Baystate Child Life Specialists are responsible for the provision of child life focused care to children and their families served in a variety of health care settings.  Individualized, therapeutic interventions are facilitated through collaboration with the patient, family, and health care team members.  The choice of play outlets, educational approaches, and emotional support are built upon a strong foundation child life theory and expertise gained through ongoing practice experiences and intentional commitment to ongoing child life education.

Responsibilities include:

  • As a per diem Child Life Specialist, you will function as an integral member of the Child Life & Healing Arts team and in partnership with the health care team, facilitating patient and family-centered support as well as advocating and enabling psychosocially sound practices across the continuum of care.

  • Child Life focused supports to children and families within the Pediatric Emergency Department, Children’s and Adolescents Inpatient Unit, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Radiology, Pediatric Procedure Unit, Peri-operative areas, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Clinic, Outpatient Specialty Clinic, Outpatient Primary Care, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and supporting children of adult patients (COAP Program.)

  • Anticipate, initiate, and respond collaboratively to provide developmentally appropriate procedural preparation and support for patients and families.

  • Recognize, address, and utilize therapeutic play to facilitate mastery and coping.

  • Advocate for identified patient and family needs.

  • Must communicate positively with patients/families & staff.  Must be highly engaged with child life role and bring an energetic, professional demeanor to each encounter.

  • Complete Minimum Requirements and Additional Responsibilities at CCLS I Proficient Level from the BCH Clinical Recognition Program.

  • The child life specialist in the per diem role will apply skills and knowledge obtained through their internship, previous employment, or received during the orientation period at Baystate Health.

  • The child life specialist in this role will require ongoing direct education and mentoring by senior child life specialists and health care team colleagues.  

  • The incumbent is expected to perform similar and related duties as assigned.

  • The Child Life & Healing Arts Manager is responsible for ensuring that the child life specialist consistently meets the necessary behaviors.

  • Must be able to transfer or reposition pediatric patients, transport via wheelchair, lift/carry patients or inanimate objects up to 10 lbs. Push or pull patients or inanimate objects between 10-40 lbs.

Required Education

1) Bachelor's Degree in Child Life or related field (Master's preferred)

2) Child Life Internship (600 hours)

3) Child Life Specialist Certification through the Association of Child Life Professionals, or eligibility for certification and successful passing of CCLS exam within 12 months of hire.

Preferred Experiences:

Child Life experience in a healthcare setting

Skills/Competencies:

Must be able to balance a wide variety of patient/family/program needs to best address an individualized care plan for patients seen in all areas where Child Life Services are provided.  Must communicate positively with patients/families & staff.  Must be highly engaged with child life role and bring an energetic, professional demeanor to each encounter.

Certifications:

1) Child Life Specialist Certification through the ACLP  (required – Will hire the right candidate who meets all other requirements and is eligible for certification through the ACLP. Must pass certification exam within 12 months of hire.)

2) BLS CPR through American Heart Association
