Summary:
The Interfaith On Call Chaplain functions as team member of Spiritual Services and provides spiritual and religious care to patients, families and staff of all faith and no recognized faith tradition in emergency situations such as end of life, trauma, moral distress, urgent questions of meaning and value. The on call chaplain primarily serves the patients, families and staff at Baystate Medical Center on all shifts, but primarily during night and weekend shifts.
Job Responsibilities:
1) The Interfaith On Call Chaplain will assess the spiritual, emotional and religious needs of patients, families and staff in urgent situations.
2) Provides spiritual and religious resources such as prayer, blessings and rituals appropriate to the spiritual and religious practice of the persons cared for.
3) Communicates effectively with the health care team to collaborate in the efforts to provide patient-family centered care with compassion and competence.
4) Documents all patient encounters in the electronic heath record using the spiritual care assessment form and will log provided spiritual care in the departmental on call log book.
5) Functions as bereavement support person to provide appropriate, professional and compassionate bereavement support including the use of rituals such as handprints, lock of hair and other personalized interventions and the distribution of bereavement support material to the family. Will follow the bereavement care policy CO92
6) Upon request by the manager of the department, the Interfaith On Call Chaplain will participate in orienting Clinical Pastoral Education students to the on call routine and procedures
7) Facilitates viewings of decedants in collaboration with the Clinical Nurse Supervisor and the health care team following the policy on Viewing Decedants in the Morgue CO 9.306
8) Participates in departmental staff meetings upon request and will participate in the life of the department as appropriate.
9) Provides spiritual care through establishing helpful pastoral relationships, crisist intervention, non-anxious presence in traumatic situation, offers guided imagery appropriately and short term counseling interventions.
10) Adheres to all departmental and hospital safety standards in order to maintain a safe patient care and work environment to promote department goals.
Required Work Experience:
1) 2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education
Preferred Work Experience:
1) 4 units of CPE, 2 years of professional ministry in congregation or institutional setting
