Baystate Health is Western Massachusetts’s premier healthcare provider and home to Baystate Medical Practices, the largest multispecialty group in the region. Baystate Medical Center, is also  the region’s only level 1 trauma center and pediatric trauma center.

We currently have an opening for an Animal Care Technician on a

per diem basis. Under the Supervision of the Animal Facility Supervisor or designee, the Animal Care Technician performs various duties related to the care of laboratory animals.

Primary responsibilities are maintaining a clean and healthy environment for laboratory animals and observing animals for their general health and well-being.  The position is considered essential and, as such, requires weekend, holiday, and off-hour coverage.

Job Requirements:

  • Observe animal health and behavior. 
  •  Perform animal husbandry duties such as feeding, watering, cage/pen cleaning of all species.
  • Handle, restrain, and sex laboratory animals.
  •  Prepare and distribute routine medications as directed, e.g., medicated drinking water or feed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and sanitization of rooms and associated equipment within the facility as well as collect and dispose of waste.
  •  Keep work areas stocked with supplies as needed for routine operation.     
  •  Maintain animal room records: e.g., census, sanitation, enrichment, feeding, and animal identification.     
  •  Maintain Validation of records and equipment.
  • Operate commonly used equipment, including machines used for washing and sterilizing items.
  • Assist with surgical cases; e.g., set up, animal handling, clean up.
  •  Ensure compliance with all Baystate, BACF, and BRF SOP's and policies.

Required Experience:

Will train, ALAT certification within 2 -3  years of employment.

Preferred Experience:

1-2 years working with animals in a lab animal environment.    

AALAS certification at the ALAT level.

Knowledge of data entry, maintaining records, using and completing forms. Experience with Microsoft Office and related software.
